  • In French contexts an hotel particulier is an urban "private house" of a grand sort. Bristol Lodging Houses

Bristol Lodging Houses

Some areas of Bristol seemed to contain a large number of lodging houses. In the 18th century visitors had flocked to Hotwells for the spa.

By the 19th century the fashionable visitors made their way to Clifton. In the 1850s and 60s they could take their pick from about 140 listed in the Directories.

But Bristol lodging houses catered for a widely varied clientele depending on the area, from the gentility of Clifton, to the rough and ready of St Philips, the majority of which did not feature in the Directories..

One such St Philips lodging house in 1851 run by Walter Teagle had about 40 lodgers with a range of occupations including butcher, Chelsea pensioner, confectioner, cordwainer, charwoman, hatter, herbalist, horsehair weaver, laundry maid, lace maker, plaster of Paris maker, seaman, silversmith, splint maker, tailor, woollen draper, labourer, servant, pedlar and beggar. It was at the edge of the city, a main route in from Gloucestershire and near to Old Market.

In 1854 legislation was brought in for the registration of common lodging houses and due to the activities of the Bristol Local Board of Health dozens that failed to register were closed. Those that remained could encounter problems with their lodgers, especially theft. In February 1857 Jane Roe was sentenced to one month's hard labour for making off with two sheets and a blanket from William Russell's ready furnished lodging house in Eugene Street.

In the 1880s you could find 30 lodging houses in the small area around Eugene Street and Great Ann Street, each holding between 10 and 80 persons a night. A report on these places stated 'The lodgers must be satisfied with what is offered them, stone floor thickly strewn with sawdust... good fire and plenty of it.' Satisfied or not, the lodgers were pretty well crammed in with several to a room and not necessarily separate beds, in many cases. ' Sleeping accommodation 2d a night for half a bed, 4d or 5d for a whole one'.

In 1893 it was written that ' thousands of poor are huddled in abject misery and thousands of others can boast no better home than that afforded by the tentative protection of a common lodging house, with which Bristol is unfortunately better supplied than with hotels.' It was not until well into the 20th century that the balance was redressed.

THE MEYRICK MANSION HOTEL. CORNER OF WESTOVER RD AND HINTON RD. BOURNEMOUTH. 1913

Westover Rd to the left and Hinton Rd opposite, as seen from Bath Rd.
It is still easy to identify part of the original structure within the much enlarged building that now stands on the site.
Listed as number 16 Westover Villas, Meyrick Mansion was built in 1838 as an apartment / boarding house. Extended, it was the Meyrick Mansion Hotel for many years, until it became the County Hotel in the 1970s, 80s and 90s.
The extended part of the building to the front is now home to a Prezzo Italian Restaurant.and the lower level to the Grand Sylhet Indian Restaurant. The Westover Newsagents shop occupies the corner at street level.
The original part of the building has been empty for a few years, although it was purchased by new owners in 2009, and has been recently undergoing a conversion into flats.
Prior to being the Prezzo, the extension was home to Rick's Piano and Caberet Bar, and before that, to the Poet's Corner nightspot.

I try, when possible, to distinguish between a property being furnished apartments, boarding houses and hotels. However this is an inexact science as one property may be listed as furnished apartments in one listing, whilst being listed simultaniously in another publication as a boarding house. Some even get listed as both within the same directory. Terms such as apartments, furnished apartments, boarding house, en pension, private hotel and hotel are based on the theme of letting rooms to paying guests, with each being subtly different. Whilst i shall endeavour to continue to distinguish between them, maybe i should apply the rule that, if it looks like a hotel and it smells like a hotel, then it is a hotel. There, that gets me out of a hole.
